Emergency Medical Care:
First Aid Resources
A very special thanks to Anne Griffin and her young library friends
for sharing this valuable resource with us!
Accidents
happen and it’s inevitable that one day you may find yourself in an
emergency situation. It’s important to know to call 9-1-1
for life threatening emergencies. But while waiting for help to
arrive, there are things you may be able to do to help save some one’s
life. First aid is defined as the initial care for an injury or an
illness. It can be performed by an expert or a non-expert until
medical professionals reach the scene. Any person can administer basic
first aid who has an understanding of how to give medical
treatment. First aid intervention usually involves a series of life
saving techniques that are simple to perform and require minimal to no
equipment.
The aims
of first aid are to preserve life by preventing further harm,
preventing the conditioning from worsening, preventing danger of
further injury, and promoting recovery. Key skills essential to first
aid are commonly known as the ABC’s of first aid. ABC stands for
airway, breathing and circulation. Life saving maneuvers commonly
known for first aid include CPR and the Heimlich maneuver. Other First
aid procedures may include: treating a burn, setting a broken bone, or
controlling bleeding. Understanding basic first aid techniques and
being trained in CPR may help save an individuals life.
